Documentaries About Doping and Jane Goodall Make Oscar Shortlist

The Russian doping scandal, the environment and the primatologist Jane Goodall are among the subjects of the 15 films on the shortlist for the Oscar for best documentary feature unveiled on Thursday.

The documentary branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences whittled the selections down from 170 films. Among its picks were “Icarus,” Bryan Fogel’s timely look at Russia’s clandestine steroid program for Olympic athletes; several films about the effects of climate change, including “Chasing Coral” and “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power” with Al Gore; and “Jane,” an account of Ms. Goodall’s work in Tanzania.

The shortlist will be culled to five nominees, to be announced on Jan. 23. The winner will be crowned at the Oscar ceremony on March 4. Here is the complete shortlist:
